In line with Saudi Vision 2030 and on Women’s International Day

13 March 2018

Taif University announced decisions by TU President Dr. Hossam bin Abdulwahhab Zaman appointing 6 females to administrative posts: a Vice President for Student Affairs, two deans, and three heads of departments in different colleges. This is a new step to empower women leaders at the University and to keep up with Saudi Vision 2030 on empowering women. The appointees are Dr. Iman Saad Al-Zahrani, Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Sara Jaza Al-Otaibi, Dean of Library Affairs, Dr. Rana Ghazi Zaini, Dean of the College of Community Service and Continuing Education, Dr. Iba Marwan Filimban, Head of the Department of Nursing at the College of Applied Medical Sciences, Dr. Ibtihal Yaqub Khoja, Head of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Science, and Dr. Rasha Abdulrahman Fallata, Head of the Department of Accounting at the College of Business Administration.

Issued in conjunction with the celebration of International Women's Day, the new resolutions raised the number of female TU deans to five. Dr. Dalal Mohyiddeen Namangani had already been appointed Dean of the College of Medicine, thus becoming the first dean of a college having faculty members and students of both sexes in Saudi Arabia. Likewise Dr. Hind Saleh Abdul Ghaffar was appointed Dean of the College of Design and Applied Arts. With the new appointees, women leaders now occupy 20% of the seats on the University Council, thus empowering women leaders to participate actively in decision-making.

This decision also coincided with the appointment by the Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ahmad bin Muhammad Al-Issa of 14 Saudi women faculty members to serve as vice presidents for female student affairs for three years, as part of the drive to realize Saudi Vision 2030 in relation to women, by developing their talents and capacities and empowering them to participate in decision-making at the level of government institutions.

The appointment of the new women leaders at Taif University reflects the commitment made by TU President Dr. Zaman during his annual meeting with the technical and administrative cadres of the University that “TU’s policy is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 to empower Saudi women in academic and administrative jobs.” Saudi Vision 2030 states that "Saudi women are an important component of our power, accounting for more than 50% of the total number of university graduates." The Vision stresses that the state will continue to "develop their talents and invest their energies and enable them to obtain appropriate opportunities to build their future and contribute to the development of our society and our economy."

Dr. Iman Saad Al-Zahrani, the new Vice President for female students, has been Vice Dean for Scientific Research and an Assistant Professor of Analytical Chemistry. She earned a PhD in this discipline from the University of Hull in 2013. Dr. Sarah Jaza Al-Otaibi was the Dean of University Studies, the highest leadership position held by a woman at TU. With a PhD in web technology from the University of Southampton (2014), Dr. Al-Otaibi is an assistant professor at the College of Computing and Information Technology. With a PhD in blood diseases from the University of Sheffield, Halm (2013), Dr. Rana Ghazi Zaini, the Dean of the College of Community Service and Continuing Education, is an assistant professor in the College of Applied Medical Sciences.
